What is Faith?
Faith is a force that moves mountains, sustains you in trials, and draws you closer to God. I know because faith has been part of my journey. Without faith, life would have been much harder. And it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).
In a world that demands evidence, certainty, and logic, faith invites you into a deeper realm: trusting God even when you don’t yet see the outcome.
But what is faith? And why does it carry so much power?
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
Faith is believing in the promises of God, even when circumstances look impossible.
The Greek word for faith, pistis, carries the idea of firm persuasion, conviction, and trust. It's not passive belief - it’s an active confidence in God’s nature, character, and word.
Faith is what empowers:
- Abraham: to leave everything and go to a land he’d never seen.
- Noah: to build an ark when there was no rain in sight.
- The woman with the issue of blood: to press through a crowd, believing just touching Jesus would heal her.
- You and I: to pray, trust, and move forward even when life feels uncertain.
The Power of Faith
1. Faith Pleases God
Faith is what God responds to. You may not have all the right words, the perfect prayer, or a spotless past, but if you come to God in faith, He sees your heart and draws near.
2. Faith Activates God’s Promises
Many of God’s promises are conditional upon belief. Jesus often said, “According to your faith, let it be done to you.” (Matthew 9:29). Faith opens the door for healing (Mark 5:34), releases provision (Matthew 6:33), and brings salvation (Ephesians 2:8). God’s power is limitless—but faith is the key that unlocks it in your life. I applied faith to have children when medical reports said there was a minimal chance of conception.
3. Faith Sustains You Through Trials
Faith is what keeps you anchored if life gets hard, and at times it does. Faith reminds you that God is still working even when you can’t feel it. It tells you that your pain is not pointless. That there’s a purpose in the process.
4. Faith Moves Mountains
“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed... nothing will be impossible for you.” — Matthew 17:20
This is not just a poetic metaphor. Jesus teaches you that faith, no matter how small, has explosive potential when placed in Him.
Faith is not about the size of our belief—it’s about the size of the God you believe. When you trust in God, the impossible becomes possible.
Real Faith in Real Life
I’ve seen firsthand how faith has changed my life. It’s been my foundation when the world didn’t make sense. There have been times I called out to God in desperation, and He answered in ways only He could.
I was held at gunpoint by robbers. The gun was so close I could look into the short barrel of the pistol. I muttered a prayer in faith, despite the gunman’s irritation at my temerity, and God came through. Deliverance came in a way I didn't expect.
There are times He has also been quiet, but faith reminds me, even in silence, He is still present. And that presence is enough to keep me going.
Faith and the Mind: More Than a Feeling
Some believe that faith is anti-intellectual or blind. But biblical faith is not ignorant; it is informed by the truth of God’s Word, the track record of God’s character, and the witness of God’s Spirit within you.
Faith is not the absence of evidence, it is the confidence beyond evidence, rooted in God’s unchanging nature.
How to Strengthen Your Faith
What are the ways to grow your faith? The Bible gives you practical steps:
- Read the Word of God
Read the scriptures regularly. Be consistent in feeding your mind with power-packed scriptures to help you. The bible has answers for everything. Regular time in Scripture fuels your faith. - Hear the Word of God
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Listen to scriptures by audio, messages in person or via YouTube, podcasts, social media, etc. Hearing scriptural messages will inspire you and increase your faith. - Pray Boldly
Faith grows through conversations with God. Don’t be afraid to talk to Him about your life and anything that matters to you. You will be surprised at the outcome. Try it! And don’t be afraid to ask for big things. - Recall God’s Faithfulness
Reflect on prayers answered, blessings given, and ways He showed up in your past. I remember when I was eighteen years old and discontent with certain things, I voiced my frustrations to my earthly dad, and he told me to do something as a way of answering me. He said I should take a sheet of paper, divide it with a vertical line in the middle. On the right, he said, “write everything you are not happy about”, while on the other side, “write everything you like about your life and things which give you joy”. I did, and he said, “Which list is longer?” Of course, I had a lot to thank God for, and that changed my perspective. - Surround Yourself with Believers
Community helps keep your faith strong when you feel weak. Find a bible-believing faith assembly to join. Attend church regularly and participate in activities. Listen to messages and imbibe the teachings. It will build your faith and provide clarity about life questions you might have. - Take Small Steps
You can start your faith journey by trusting God in small things. Trusting God in small things builds confidence to believe in bigger ones. Don’t be afraid to trust Him. His methodology for answering you is His prerogative; allow Him to do His job without interference. At times, you might get in the way of God helping you in the best way you need to be helped.
Leadership and Faith
When you lead with intention, you are purposeful about your decisions. As a leader, you need to be self-aware and know that while data-driven decisions have their place, life is still largely spiritual.
A dose of spiritual intelligence brings God into the equation by faith; God can give you insights about a situation that hardcore data might not reveal.
If Joshua had deployed a faith-based approach in dealing with the Gibeonites, he would not have been deceived into signing a treaty with them (Joshua 9).
Joshua was a war general with military know-how. He relied on his knowledge of the terrain and did not approach God in faith to decode the real intentions of his visitors. Bring God into the picture always and rely on His guidance.
You don’t need to make a show in the boardroom, but you can quietly whisper a prayer under your breath in the meeting, for God to bring clarity and direction.
Faith Still Works
Faith may not always change your circumstances immediately, but it always changes you. It draws you closer to God, builds your endurance, and shapes your character to look more like Christ.
You don’t need perfect faith. You just need a willing heart and the courage to believe that God is who He says He is.
Has faith made a difference in your life? Are you in a place where your faith is being tested?
Let’s walk this journey together—because faith isn’t meant to be lived out alone.
