Spiritual Intelligence: How to Overcome what was meant to Kill You

Post Page Advertisement [Top]

There’s a growing chorus in the world today telling you that believing in God is outdated, unscientific, or even foolish.

Recent studies show a rapid decline in religious affiliation worldwide. In the U.S. alone, 30% of adults now identify as having “no religion” (The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Poll, 2023). Many of them are people raised in religious homes who have walked away, saying they couldn’t find answers, or that faith didn’t feel real anymore.

Some even say faith is just a psychological crutch, a leftover tradition, or a way to explain what science hasn’t figured out yet.

I get it. Life can feel brutal and confusing.

I’ve heard the arguments. I’ve seen the skepticism.
But still — I believe.
Not blindly. Not because I was told to.
But because I’ve lived it.

When God Showed Up

Sometime ago, I was watching cable news and a popular Anchor said, “…a troubled world in troubling times.” Very apt to describe the situation of things in the world of today. At the risk of sounding morbid, the truth is that many people are troubled by both global events and personal issues.

While you might not be fully in control of world events, you can at the very least exercise much more control over what affects you directly through faith… be it in the area of your health, relationships, finances, or in whatever circumstance life throws at you.

Every challenge under the sun has a solution, which could either be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Applying the right solution in the right way to your circumstance will likely result in your desired result, provided the requisite terms and conditions for the application of that solution are met. The focus of your faith must be on what is pleasing to God, even though it is likely to be for your purposes.

To illustrate faith in an adverse real-life circumstance, I will tell you the story of my harrowing experience in 2013 when the doctor told me that they could not wake my husband up (he had just undergone surgery and was still in the theatre), after trying to do so for over 4 hours.

In December 2013, my husband went in for a straightforward forty-minute surgery that turned into an eight-hour nightmare as everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. During the surgery, his blood pressure rose to over 200, his blood sugar became abnormally high, even though he is not diabetic, while he bled from both his nose and mouth.

Attempts to suck out fluid from his lungs brought out more blood, which the medical team found strange. After the surgery, the medical team battled for over 41/2 hours to resuscitate him. They could not. I went into shock when the medical director came to address me.

His words, “We have done everything………”. He was not waking up. I said NO! You tried, but God has not. I asked to be taken to the theatre. He initially refused and later gave permission when I agreed to hold it together. They made me wear sterilized clogs and led me in.

When I saw my husband’s motionless body with tubes, I knew it was not the time for tears. He needed to come back before it was too late. I looked up to God and asked Him to shut both heaven and hell so my husband’s spirit would not get in. This was because I did not want to take any chances. I asked God not to attend to his spirit if he came to present himself to Him, but to send it back into his body.

I insisted that his time was not yet up, reminding God that according to His word, my husband still had many more years to live. I reminded Him of all He had done for me in the past and maintained that He could not do anything different now. I informed the Lord I was not letting my husband go, as we had every intention of growing old together.

Addressing my husband, I commanded his body organs and all his body parts to align with the word of God, asking them to function as intended. I called each vital organ by name, reversing the process of death. I asked the Lord to replace any dysfunctional part with the spare parts bearing my husband’s name from His storehouse in heaven.

I spoke to my husband, reminding him that he had three children waiting for him outside those doors, stating we never agreed that he would die at this time in our lives. I bound and cast out every foul spirit on assignment in his life and operating within the theatre. I commanded the spirit of death to leave the theatre, that he was not meant to be on assignment there, but should depart because it was not the time for my husband to go.

After several declarations, decrees, and prayers, I led praise and worship in the theatre with the medical team singing along, reminding God of who He is, recounting what He had done for me in the past, and believing by faith that God would show up and raise my husband back to life. After which, I collapsed.

In the physical world, nothing seemed to change. I was taken out of the theatre, unable to feel my legs as the reality of what was happening was dawning on me. I knew, however, that I could not entertain doubt at this point, or he might be gone forever. I had to stay focused in the spirit, no matter what my physical eyes were seeing.

Tears welled up in my eyes as they took me to his hospital room, where my children were waiting for their daddy to come out from the theatre alive. They took one look at me and started crying as I asked them to pray for their father to live. My children continued to cry as the nurses and the doctors laid me on the bed. A feeling of great devastation took hold of me as I cried. I could not imagine God not showing up. No!!! I could not imagine that.

Suddenly, the urge to continue the fight rose within me. I could not let my husband die. I needed to stay strong no matter what. The more these thoughts came to me, the more it struck me that his life was not negotiable. My husband had to live. Yes, he had to stay alive. I immediately knew what I had to do. Fight, fight, and never stop fighting.

As long as I remained in the spirit, I knew I would win. I refused at that moment to look at the physical happenings and started singing a worship song in vernacular. In English, the song says:

You are God, You are not a Man (2x)

Jehovah Jireh, You are God

Remember, Lord, You are God

You are God, You are not a Man

As I cried, singing this song over and over again, suddenly the Lord spoke. God gave me a word, saying three times, “I have kept him alive because of you”. At His words, I knew my husband would live. How? I still did not know, given the severity of the situation, but I knew who was speaking. Thereafter, I heard a great shout from the theatre where a host of medical specialists were gathered.

From their account: He jerked up suddenly from where he lay, with bloodshot eyes looking round like someone woken rudely from his sleep. The nurses rushed out to get me back into the theatre. God showed up! All tests conducted on him subsequently showed his vitals were okay. Twelve years and still counting, my husband lives. All glory to God!

The God Who Showed Up for Me

Philosophies that deny God’s existence can seem logical or liberating on the surface, but they lack one thing: the power to transform a broken heart.

Therefore, I believe in God because I’ve seen Him move in ways that no argument can erase.

There were moments in my life, such as when I was held by robbers at gunpoint, where I had nothing left but a whispered prayer. And in those moments, God showed up.

Not always in the way I expected. But in a way that told me:
“I am here. I hear you. You are not alone.”

You can’t explain that away. That kind of peace in the middle of a storm? That sudden strength when everything in you wants to give up? That is not a coincidence. That’s not wishful thinking. That’s God!

Scripture Still Speaks

The Bible isn’t just an old book to me. It’s a living and active document. It speaks to the human condition with shocking accuracy:

  • Doubt: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – (Proverbs 3:5)
  • Loneliness: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – (Hebrews 13:5b)
  • Struggle: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” – (Isaiah 43:2)
  • Purpose: “For we are God’s masterpiece… created to do good works.” – (Ephesians 2:10)

These aren’t just verses—they’re truths I’ve clung to when nothing else made sense. And every time, God is faithful.

Faith Isn’t Against Reason: It Goes Beyond

Belief in God isn’t irrational. Many of the world’s greatest thinkers—like Robert Boyle, Francis Bacon, and even modern scientists like Francis Collins (former head of the Human Genome Project) — were/are people of deep faith.

Collins once said, “The God of the Bible is also the God of the genome. He can be worshiped in the cathedral or the laboratory.”

Creation itself testifies to God’s reality, and science explains it:

  • The Earth is in perfect balance for life, with multiple physical parameters.
  • DNA is a code, and every code points to a Coder.
  • Consciousness, mortality, love—none of these can be fully explained without something greater.

Romans 1:20 says it plainly:

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”

Implications for Intentional Leaders

A leader should be intentional in who and what he or she believes in. Your belief system frames your decisions and influences your partnerships. The evidence is there to believe in God. And if you believe in Him, it expands your decision-making framework. You have the opportunity to seek His guidance, thereby accessing a powerful partnership that provides insight, hindsight, and foresight.

I Believe Because He Transformed Me

Even if no one else ever believed again, I would. Because God met me when I was stuck. He taught me how to live, to think, and to forgive. He showed me how to love others—and myself. He gave me identity, peace, and purpose that nothing else could offer.

And that’s not something you can argue away. That’s not fragile. That’s real.

To the One Who’s Searching

Maybe you’ve heard the voices that say God isn’t real. Maybe life has left you bitter, tired, or skeptical. But deep down, maybe you’re still searching. Still hoping.

If that’s you, I want you to know: God is not far from you.

Call out. Even if it’s messy. Even if you’re angry. Even if you’re unsure.
He listens. He loves you. He wants to be known.

And one day, when He shows up for you, no one will be able to convince you otherwise.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13

Are you searching for something real?

If you're questioning, doubting, or just weary, you’re not alone.

I’d love to pray for you or hear your story.
